Marine & Defence Sector

Film production for the marine and defence industries from someone who spent twenty-five years working in them: on the boats, in the water, and running the operations.

In short

  • I make films for marine, maritime and defence-sector organisations.
  • I was a commercial diver and ran marine businesses for years, so I understand your work, your safety rules and your language.
  • I'm based in Plymouth, close to Devonport and the waterfront.

What I make

I've done the work you're filming

Most crews arrive on a vessel or a dockside and need everything explained twice. I've planned commercial diving work to HSE rules, run boats, managed teams of up to twenty across Europe, and lectured on Plymouth University's commercial diving programme.

I know what a dive plan, a permit to work and a chain of command are, and I know when to stay out of the way. Your people will spend their time on the job, not on briefing the film crew.

Based in Plymouth

Plymouth is home to Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe, and one of the busiest working waterfronts in the country. I live here, I know the Sound and the Tamar, and I plan around tides and weather windows as a matter of habit.

Your rules, agreed up front

Before we film, we agree exactly what can and can't be shown, who signs off the edit, and how footage is stored and handled. I work to your site rules, escorts and photography restrictions.

Background & qualifications

From the work

Aerial view of a small white motor boat crossing open water, trailing a wake
What's in this film: Bagheera

Drone footage following the motor boat Bagheera as it cuts across calm, open water on a bright day, leaving a white wake behind it. The shoreline and a small island sit low on the horizon.

Aerial view of a fleet of white-sailed dinghies racing on Plymouth Sound
What's in this film: Plymouth

Aerial footage of Plymouth's waterfront in soft evening light. It includes Smeaton's Tower, the red and white lighthouse on the Hoe; a fleet of sailing dinghies racing on the Sound; and Tinside Lido seen from directly above, its pale blue pool curving against the dark sea.

Aerial view of the Tamar Bridge with traffic, above the river and moored boats
What's in this film: Tamar Bridge

Aerial shot over the Tamar Bridge as traffic crosses between Devon and Cornwall, with dozens of boats moored on the river below and the waterside town along the bank.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Talk

We start with a conversation in whatever way suits you: email, phone, or a video call with captions on. No pressure and no jargon.

  2. Step 2: Plan

A short questionnaire, a clear plan and a schedule. I ask about everyone's access needs up front, on both sides of the camera.

  3. Step 3: Film

A small crew and a calm set. Days are planned around the people in the film, not the other way round.

  4. Step 4: Edit

You see the cut, tell me what's working and what isn't, and we refine it together.

  5. Step 5: Deliver

Every format you need, with the accessible versions included as standard rather than added on.

Questions

Can you film on board and on the water?

Yes. Filming on board and from the water is where my background counts most. For underwater filming I plan the shoot and bring in a qualified dive team.

Do you work outside the South West?

Yes. I'm based in Plymouth but work wherever the project is.

Can footage be kept confidential?

Yes. We agree before filming how footage is stored, who can see it, and who signs off what's released.

Talk to someone who knows the water

Tell me about the project, the site and any restrictions. I'll come back with a plan that fits how you operate.
